Sgt. Shane Parsons’ inspiring journey began when he decided to join the military in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Although he lost his father at a young age, Shane was imbued with a strong sense of duty and commitment from his family. He enlisted in the army after completing high school and was deployed to Iraq as a member of Bravo 3rd Company, 67th Regiment.

On September 30, 2006, during a mission for which he had volunteered, Shane’s vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED), leading to the loss of both his legs above the knee. He also sustained a traumatic brain injury during his evacuation, which severely impacted his ability to read, write, and perform basic daily activities.

Through determination and extensive rehabilitation, Shane has regained some of his mobility, speech, and self-care capabilities. However, his brain injury continues to affect his memory, mood, and mental health. Despite these challenges, he has discovered new passions and interests, such as playing basketball and participating in a veteran sled hockey team. Shane also married his wife, Jen, in 2016, and the couple welcomed a son soon after.

A Gary Sinise Foundation custom Smart Home will offer Shane greater accessibility, allowing him to take on a more active role in his family’s life. The adapted home will facilitate easier movement, enabling him to perform daily tasks, such as bathing his son and contributing to household chores. Shane also aspires to find part-time employment and potentially coach high school football.

Coppertree Homes and the Gary Sinise Foundation are committed to building a home that will alleviate Shane’s daily challenges and enhance his mobility and independence.
